About Taco Junky, Boulder’s Best New Restaurant: In February 2015, Boulder’s University Hill got a present: Taco Junky & Tequila Bar {1149 13th Street, Boulder; 303.443.2300}. Owners Evey and Mike Caravello had recently moved to Boulder from Chicago, and noticed that the area was hard up for a place where students and locals alike could procure a tasty taco or two.

At the heart of this colorful space are illuminated bottles of tequila and a mural by local artists Laura McGowan and William Thompson that captures the spirit of political and social youth movements. The artwork contributes to Taco Junky’s overall vibe of “postmodern eclectic taqueria/cantina.”

The tacos here are less attempts at authenticity and more opportunities for wrapping up international flavors in tortillas. Chef William Dabney changes the menu seasonally, and also offers creative dips and sides like BLT and Coconut Guacamoles, and Watermelon Ceviche. There are always nine tacos to choose from, eight of which change with the seasons. All sauces—along with pretty much everything from tortilla chips to margarita mix—are made in-house.

While Taco Junky naturally serves up mean margaritas, they also offer tequila flights. This is a great way to get to know different varieties and brands of tequila, as well as to select the perfect one for a marg. House-infused tequilas are another good way to experience a flight; Taco Junky offers varieties like cucumber, pineapple habanero, and mango kiwi.
